It was my first visit to the Carrière des Lumières in Les Baux de Provence, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There were only enough of us for one car, so it was an environmentally friendly trip. We arrived early enough to buy our tickets in advance, thus avoiding lines to get in, and then had time for wandering in the village and doing some shopping before lunch. The weather was sunny, and the wind had calmed, so we were able to sit outside on the terrace of the Restaurant de la Reine Jeanne (not to be confused with the Auberge of the same name in St. Rémy).
I ordered a simple artichoke starter, but the others found themselves overwhelmed by the enormous serving of aioli with steamed vegetables and fish. (So I helped them with the veggies.)
The expo in the Carrière is entitled Chagall, Songe d’une nuit d’été.
Photography was difficult with my little low-tech camera, especially since the light show was in constant motion, but sometimes the colors were vivid, and one can at least get an idea of the huge surfaces on which the images were projected. It’s classed as an audio-visual show, but we were not too impressed with the choice of music to accompany the artwork and photography. The Chagall part of the show was shorter than we expected, and was followed by a tribute to Lewis Carroll, which we found to be less interesting than the Lewis Carroll tea, with costumes and readings, at the beginning of March. We supposed it was meant to be symbolic, with teapots and hearts, but there was no Queen, and no Alice, and if it had not been for the Cheshire cat’s grin, we might not have even known what it was about.
The show will continue until 8 January, 2017, in case you’d like to see it.
Many thanks to Jan for organizing the outing, and for being the designated driver.
