Katharine: Christmas 2012

Christmas by John Betjeman
The bells of waiting Advent ring,
The Tortoise stove is lit again
And lamp-oil light across the night
Has caught the streaks of winter rain
In many a stained-glass window sheen
From Crimson Lake to Hookers Green.

The holly in the windy hedge
And round the Manor House the yew
Will soon be stripped to deck the ledge,
The altar, font and arch and pew,
So that the villagers can say
'The church looks nice' on Christmas Day.

Provincial Public Houses blaze,
Corporation tramcars clang,
On lighted tenements I gaze,
Where paper decorations hang,
And bunting in the red Town Hall
Says 'Merry Christmas to you all'.

And London shops on Christmas Eve
Are strung with silver bells and flowers
As hurrying clerks the City leave
To pigeon-haunted classic towers,
And marbled clouds go scudding by
The many-steepled London sky.

And girls in slacks remember Dad,
And oafish louts remember Mum,
And sleepless children's hearts are glad.
And Christmas-morning bells say 'Come!'
Even to shining ones who dwell
Safe in the Dorchester Hotel.

And is it true,
This most tremendous tale of all,
Seen in a stained-glass window's hue,
A Baby in an ox's stall ?
The Maker of the stars and sea
Become a Child on earth for me ?

And is it true ? For if it is,
No loving fingers tying strings
Around those tissued fripperies,
The sweet and silly Christmas things,
Bath salts and inexpensive scent
And hideous tie so kindly meant,

No love that in a family dwells,
No carolling in frosty air,
Nor all the steeple-shaking bells
Can with this single Truth compare -
That God was man in Palestine
And lives today in Bread and Wine.
The Editor of Scriveners wishes all AWG members far and wide a very Happy Christmas.

Maggie: Holiday cookie exchange

Everyone's family loved the cookies that came home from the cookie exchange

... and the kids who were present had a great time.  (Sorry, no photos of children on Scriveners).

Thursday 20 December 2012

Editor: Welcome to the new Scriveners 2013 site

Dear AWG members:  you have arrived at the new Scriveners site.

I have begun to post AWG items on this site, beginning with some of our 2012 holiday events - the Garden Group's lunch and the Cook & Eat's lunch.  More photos from December events will go up as I receive them.

The previous Scriveners site will remain as our archive for events from 2009 through to 2012.
One of the items posted there was of the Curtis Roosevelt talk in late November - and here's a photo or two from that event.   The write-up of the event is on the old Scriveners site.

Mr Curtis Roosevelt, grandson of President FDR

Mr Roosevelt with the Lycee students from Mary-Cat's son's class.

So there you have it - the old and the new.  Please make regular visits here as we build up our set of
events and photos into 2013.

Peggy F: Cook&Eat celebrates Christmas

This is where the morning's planning starts - before the real work begins

Laetitia and Kim work on the spinach custards that will accompany the beef
A group of ten of us -  Caroline, Elisabeth, Robyn, Kim, Laetitia, Roz, Katharine, Maggie, Peggy F (along with Melissa G who joined us for lunch) - had a Christmas feast under Caroline's tutelage.

Another wonderful Christmas morning  of work followed by a delectable lunch.  Photos of the dishes we prepared will be found on Caroline's blog.
Roz works on placing the carpaccio of scallops

It wouldn't be Christmas Cook & Eat without champagne....

...... or foie gras

Scallop carpaccio, avocado, crushed pink peppercorns and alfalfa

Gift exchange - Katharine is happy to receive Happy Socks....

Peggy F and Maggie: Garden Group Christmas lunch

Sue Rich was our hostess with the mostest in her gracious home

Some of the wreaths and decorations made during the morning

Peggy R and Rosie.
A group of seven of us - Sue Rich, Peggy R, Rosie, Katharine C, Maggie, Robyn, Peggy F, convened at Sue's home for a morning of creative work.  The two Peggy's had spent the day prior collecting greens for the project.  It was most enjoyable to work at Sue's kitchen table and talk in a convivial way while we got creative (some of us are much better at it than others, but we all ended up with credible efforts).  Rosie told Sue subsequently that she hoped that Sue wasn't chasing red berries all over the kitchen floor after we'd left.   A delightful lunch followed, including veloute de cepes with truffles;  Tunisian salad with pomegranate seeds;  Mac and cheese with swiss chard (blette);  a celeriac maindish, product of Maggie's gourmet classes;  chocolate pie, fruit salad and mince pies. Well,
it's hungry work all that floristry!

Thanks Sue for a smashing morning, and thank you Peggy, our Garden Group coordinator.

Peggy works outside in the garden - a little damp that day

Wreath-making on every available countertop

Sue set a very elegant table for our lunch:  from l to r: Peggy F, Rosie, Robyn, Katharine, Maggie and Sue

We all went home with holiday decorations after a great morning's work.

Deb: Foundation night at the FAWCO Bern Conference

Conference 2013

Bern2013_logo_optimized_web2
The Foundation endlessly asks for your generosity, and you continue to exceed expectations. The annual FAWCO conference is The Foundation's largest fundraising event of the year. If you have experienced The Foundation's live auction in the past, you know the excitement and energy it creates.  It also helps generate the money needed to fund our annual development grants and education awards, as well as other special projects and programs.

Again this year, we need those popular live auction items, such as: vacation home stays,  homes stays in popular cities, B&B or hotel stays; or a special item that will help fuel the excitement and open the pocketbooks. We encourage you and your club members to donate to this years live auction in Bern. Please contactSuzanne Wheeler with items or questions you have.
