2016 Development Grant Recipients

EDUCATION 

AW of Surrey Hope Through Education
RECIPIENT: MENTAWAI BOARDING SCHOOL
Location: Indonesia
Nominating Club: AWG Languedoc-Rousillon

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds will be used to purchase materials and pay workers to repair the roof and the floor of the Mentawai Boarding School dormitory. Without the Grant, the dormitory may be forced to close.

Pam Dahlgren Educating Africa's Children
RECIPIENT: HOPE ALIVE FOUNDATION - Mary Handley Initiative on Child Health and Education (MHI)
Location: Malawi
Nominating Club: AWA Rome

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds will provide school year fees, uniforms, fuel for transportation, books, clothes, role model sessions, professional counseling sessions, administration expenses and emergency intervention funds when needed.

RECIPIENT: SOLAR POWERED SHOWERS FOR HEALTH AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN NORTHERN ETHIOPIA
Location: Ethiopia

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds will provide a new cleaning unit that will produce clean water to store in tanks for showers or for drinking water for the entire school community of 1,430 students/staff. This will expand the school’s current responsible use of water in the form of dry, composting toilets, and rainwater collected from rooves (150,000 liters per year). Additionally, students will collect safe water for home use in plastic bottles, thereby giving them more time for schoolwork.

HEALTH

RECIPIENT: MOTHERS AVERTING AIDS
Location: Republic of South Africa
Nominating Club: AILO Florence 

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds will be used to train and support 50 women and mentor 50-75 girls at eKhaya eKasi in Khayelitsha, South Africa over a 12-month period. Funds will be divided between small business training, art exploration training and field trips, product development, health and life skills resources, training and mentoring, and up-to-date DVD’s, audio CD’s and image-heavy literature.

RECIPIENT: EYE SURGERY AND PLACEMENT OF PROSTHETIC EYE
Location: Philippines
Nominating Club: AILO Florence

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds will fill in the gap of sponsors for the eye operations needed by these visually impaired children; they shall be used for eye surgery, eye surgery with reconstruction, placement of prosthetic eye and out of pocket expenses to include medicines, transportation and meals, all following a per need basis, and a strict screening process.

HUMAN RIGHTS

RECIPIENT: GROWING GUAYULE TO FIGHT AIDS AND PROVIDE BIO-FUEL (a/k/a/ Condoms,
Cash, and Cooking Fuel)
Location: Republic of South Africa
Nominating Club: AWG Languedoc-Rousillon 

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant will be used to purchase fencing and equipment for local women to plant fields of guayule. They will be able to sell the seeds they harvest and the crops they produce, thus providing for their families and developing the economy, and Bira will become a demonstration site.

FAUSA Displaced Women and Children
RECIPIENT: CASA RUTH AND THE NEW HOPE COOPERATIVE PROJECT
Location: Italy
Nominating Club: AWC Naples

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds will be used directly for the support of the women housed in Casa Ruth for medicine, diapers, powdered milk, homogenized baby foods, clothing, etc. for the youngest children. Additionally, it will provide for two work fellowships for two young mothers to learn or hone their sewing skills, business acumen, socialization and learning to operate a small store front. They will also be given seed money for finding housing and re-integrating after being trafficked, and to obtain various legal documents: residency permits, citizenship certificates, passports, identity cards, etc. The project aims to transform the lives of these women with the pride and confidence of having attained a marketable skill and the ability to manage a home and properly care for their children.

RECIPIENT: FRAUEN HELFEN FRAUEN (WOMEN HELPING WOMEN)
Location: Germany
Nominating Club: AIWC Frankfurt/Taunus

Purpose of the Grant:
The Development Grant funds would cover a second offering of Fraueninsel, including staff costs, rent for the space, writing materials, supplies and excursions.
